This is a pair of $50 released in 1995 to mark the end of the $50 paper note and the beginning of the polymer series. Both notes are signed by Bernie Fraser and Ted Evans. Both notes have red serial number and an overprint date of "4 October 1995" on the back for the polymer note. The interesting about this paper note is that, not only did it features red serial numbers, but also for the first and only time that the serial numbers format of AA95 is used. All previous paper notes issued were printed with the 3 letters prefix. Only 900 sets of this were issued to the public.

Album Cover

The above set was put together by the Central Bank of Vanuatu in 1982 to celebrate the first set of Vanuatu banknotes issued by the country following gaining independence from Britain and France in 1980. These folder note sets were sold at a premium and all three notes come with AA prefix and low matching serial numbers. I believe there are no certificate issued for this release nor there any overprint on the album that housed the notes. All notes were signed by Philip Shing (President) and John A Howard (General Manager). Other denominations were later added to the Vatu series, with Vt5000 in 1989, Vt200 in 1995 and Vt10,000 (polymer) in 2010. We will expect to see more new notes from Vanuatu, all polymers, to be released including the new Vt2,000 later, and this will depends on the current remaining stock of the paper notes.

The above notes were printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co Ltd, New Malden, Surrey, England.

Lawrence Hargrave (1850-1915) came from England to Australia as a young man. In 19883, he gave up paid employment to concentrate on his experiences with flight.

His experiments led him to work on box kites and on 12 November 1894 at Stanwell Park, New South Wales, he succeeded in lifting himself from the ground with four box kites attached on the ground by piano wire.

Hargrave made great contributions to aeronautical history. his inventions were vital to the success of manned powered flight. He became famous throughout the world or early aviation because of the large number of scientific papers he wrote.

Not only did Hargrave make major breakthroughs in the physics of flight, he invented the rotary engine which has to be the basic for powered aircraft.

Despite all of Hargrave's significant contributions, it is for his experiments with box kites that he will be remembered.

Foot Note: the vertical two uncut sheet was released at the Numismatic Association of Australia's International Coin/Banknote fair in Adelaide on 5/6 September 1992. Issue Price was $32.50 and was released with a large folder. I also have the horizontal pair (4,000 issued), but unable to scan the note as my scanner can not cover the entire note (too long to scan).
The horizontal pair was released during the International Coin/Banknote Fair in Melbourne on 11/12 July 1992.

This note was issued together with a silver (99% fine) proof one dollar coin in honouring the achievements of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (1897-1935) and celebrating the centenary of his birth. This $20 bears an overprint of "Sir Charles Kingsford Smith Centenary" on the right hand side of the note and printed on the last prefix of "ADK". This is portfolio number 653 of 4000 produced.

Note and stamps issued to commemorate 50 years since Howard Florey’s award of the Nobel Price for his contributions to medical science.

Lord Howard Florey (1898-1968) was one of Australia’s most eminent medical scientists. He gained prominence when he became interested in Alexander Fleming’s initial work on developing the life saving drug, penicillin. In 1939, Florey and his colleague, Ernst Chain, worked on Fleming’s discovery and purified the drug. In 1942 a small amount of the penicillin was tested on badly burned airmen with good results. Their discovery helped save thousands of lives during the Second World War. Florey was knighted in 1944 and appointed a life Peer in 1965. In 1945 he was awarded the Nobel Prioze, together with Fleming and Chain.

The $50 bears a special letter prefix of “HF” and issued with pane of 10 x $2.50 Howard Florey stamps. This is portfolio number 2554 of 3500 produced.

The first notes were printed in a Customs establishment situated near the Melbourne Docks - the (then) King's Warehouse. This building, which is still stands today as the Queen's Warehouse, acts as the central design theme in this folder. To link the 1913 with 1993, the numbering on the left hand side of this Twenty Dollar note has been printed in a similar typeface, colour and in the same numbering range as used in 1913 for the ten shilling note. The numbering typeface on the right hand side is the same used on paper notes in 1993 but in red - the first decimal note to be numbered in this colour. By taking the predecimal Ted Pound (now $20) note into consideration, this particular denomination circulated between 1925 and 1973 as the highest value note issued for the longest period of Australia's note issuing history - 48 years.

Chatham Islands – Three sets of notes issued between 1999 and 2000. To me, these are just monopoly money. A statement was issued by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand back then confirming that these so called Chatham Islands currency have no legal tendering status in New Zealand.

Antarctica – These notes are issued by private individual or entity for the purpose of raising funds to finance scientific research in the Antarctica. These notes are issued at par value with the US Dollar and usually come with a 'used by date'.

Australia Bank Training Notes

These are Bank Training Notes and they are not legal tender. These notes were printed by Note Printing Australia for circulation within the Australian banking system. These notes were used to assist in the training of bank tellers. The materials used for these notes were printed on genuine silk fibre banknotes paper with special multi coloured silk threads as an anti-counterfeiting device and were printed in the same colour and size as the last Australian paper banknotes. There is a story to tell on the paper used for these notes. Back in 1964 where the then Commonwealth Bank (now Commonwealth Bank of Australia) had intended to issue a new Five Shilling banknote. When the decision was cancelled, NPA used them to print these training notes instead. These notes are not rare and in fact quite affordable.
