It is believed that only two notes were issued with the year date of (nd)2024, and here I have posted both the notes. No change to the designs and these are the reduced sizes series, first introduced in 2016.

This is a commemorative note of 100 kina that was released on 28.01.2026 to celebrate the first anniversary of the passing of Papua New Guinea's second Prime Minister. Sir Julius Chan. Sir Julius died on 30.01.2025 in Huris, New Ireland Province. Following his death, the government of Papua New Guinea declared a week of national mourning. He was given a state funeral in Port Moresby, the capital city and his remains were then buried in New Ireland Province.

Sir Julius Chan was born half Chinese and half Papua New Guinean (mother Miriam Tinkoris, a native of New Ireland). His father was Chan Pak (陳柏 b.1896-1994 Sydney Australia), a trader originally came from Taishan, a coaster city situated in the southwest of Guangdong province. Sir Julius was the fifth child out of seven children, and it was believed that he spoke Cantonese, apart from English and a local dialect of Papua New Guinea. During the Second World War, because of his mixed race, the Japanese occupiers treated the entire Chan family as outsiders and put his father into forced labour building roads and bridges. One of his younger brothers died during the war (casualty of war). His older brother was in Hong Kong schooling during the war, and was tricked by a family friend and sold as a slave in China working as a farm labour. He was then rescued by a Communist Party general and they made him a shoe cleaner and a pistol carrier. After the war the Chinese General felt sorry for him and helped him to return to Hong Kong as a free man and later he managed to return home and united with the family in Papua New Guinea.

This is the second time in the history of the Bank of Papua New Guinea since 1975 that banknotes were issued honoring a politician. The first time this happened was Sir Michael Somare on a fifty kina paper note issued in 1989. Since then, the 50 kina note with the portrait of Sir Michael Somare has been reprinted in polymer substrate materials including normal and commemorative notes, and I am just wondering if this 100 kina note with the portrait of Sir Julius Chan will be the same design for all future reprints. The difference between Sir Michael Somare and Sir Julius Chan is that the 50 kina notes were issued when Sir Michael Somare was still alive and Sir Julius Chan is not.

Whilst this note was issued as a commemorative banknote, there is nothing, like a commemorative logo or text to say this is a commemorative issue.

Back - The portrait of the late Sir Julius Chan (b.1939-2025). Julius Chan who was the second Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea from 1980 to 1982, and again in 1994 to March 1997, and June 1997 to July 1997. Julius Chan was half Chinese and half native of Papua New Guinea and was born on Tanga Islands. His Chinese given name is 陳仲民 (transliteration - Chan Chung-min/Chen Zhongmin). His father was from Taishan (泰山 - southern China, near Macau) in China. Apart from Papua New Guinea dialects and English, he also spoke Cantonese. Apart from being the country's Prime Minister, he was also the 4th governor of New Ireland from 2007 to 2025 (until his death). Julius Chan was born in 1939 and died on 30.01.2025 at the age of 85 years old. Other images printed on this note is an image of a fisherman on a canoe (shark caller) catching sharks.

Here, I have posted the 50 kina polymer note issued commemorating the country's 50th year of gaining independence from Australia. This note was reportedly released on 28.08.2025 to the public for circulation.

Papua New Guinea achieved independence on 16.09.1975 after almost 57 years of under the Australian administration. Papua New Guinea was given to Australia's rule after the end of World War I. Prior to that, the country was divided into two, with the German occupying the top half of present-day Papua New Guinea and the British occupying the bottom half. In 1902, the British ceded their control to Australia and after the defeat of the German in the First World War, the part that was occupied by the German prior the war was then handed over to the Australia control.

Since gaining independence, numerous banknotes have been released to celebrate the country's independence: -

2010 - Full set 35th Anniversary of Independence

2015 - 20 kina 40th Anniversary of Independence

The design for this 50 kina commemorative note is very similar to the current 50 kina normal circulating note but with added commemorative features mainly on the front.

Below are three notes all printed with the year nd2023. At present, only these notes have been reported and we are not sure if the five, twenty and fifty kina have been released as well, as the last print for these notes were all dated nd2021. Time will tell if more than 3 notes have been issued for the nd2023 series.

Here is a 50 kina nd2023 polymer commemorative note issued for the celebration of the 50th year of self-governing and independence 1973 - 2023.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) was first occupied by Germany (only the northern part) in 1884, and by the British in the southern part of the island. The country was then given to Australia to administer following the end of the First World War in 1918 when Germany was defeated. On 01.12.1973, the country was granted self-rule by the Australian and Sir Michael Somare (b.1936-2021) became the first Chief Minister. Independence was then achieved on 16.09.1975 and Michael Somare became the first Prime Minister. Michael Somare was also the longest serving Prime Minister of PNG for 17 years over three separate terms, from 1975 to 1980; 1982 to 1985, and from 2002 to 2011. He retired from politics in 2017, and in PNG, he is known as the Father of the Nation. For all banknotes issued since 1975, Michael Somare is the only person to have his portrait appear on the banknotes. His portrait first appeared on the banknote (50 kina only) in 1989.

The main designs for these notes are basically the same since they were first issued in 2008 for the 5 kina; 2007 for the 20 kina; 2002 for the 50 kina, and the 100 kina in 2005. However, these are reduced resize notes, first released in 2016 with the 5 kina note.

Back - The main design is the image of Sir Michael Thomas Somare (b.1936-2021). He was the first Prime Minister of PNG since independence, from 1975 to 1980, and again from 1982 to 1985; 2002 to 2010; and for another 46 days in early 2011. To his left are various Headdresses and Masks from various PNG regions : - Bainings (East New Britain); The Orokolo (Gulf Province); the Huli (Southern Highlands Province); The Tubuan (East New Britain Province), A West Sepik and a Malagan Mask (New Ireland Province).

The portrait of Sir Michael Thomas Somare was first printed on the 50 kina note in 1989. No doubt that this was to honor him as the first Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea since obtaining independence from Australia in 1975. Until today, only his portrait is used on the banknote series.

Here are the only two Parliament polymer notes series issued or sighted with the year date of (nd)2020. The designs are the same as those previously issued, however, this is the first time the 10 kina was issued since 2016, when the resized series was first introduced. This Parliament polymer series was first introduced in 2005.

The dimensions for this resized series are all measuring the same, as 125mm x 70mm.

I believe this is the only note printed with the year date of (nd)2019. This is the Parliament series first introduced in 2010 as a commemorative note. In 2016, this series was then resized and this is the reprint of the 2016 issue.

Below are three notes all issued in 1988. The signatures on these notes belonged to Sir Henry ToRobert (b.1942-(Governor) and John Vulupindi (Secretary, Department of Finance). These are the reprints of the 1975 first issue. These are the only three notes printed with these signature combinations. In addition to these three denominations, other denominations (20 and 50 kina) were also issued between 1981 to 1991.

Sir Henry ToRobert was the first governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea. He was appointed to the Governor of the bank on 22.10.1973 before Papua New Guinea achieved independence. He left the bank on 30.07.1993.

John Vulupindi was also later appointed as the fourth Governor of the Bank of Papua New Guinea from 09.04.1998 to 29.07.1998. I believe he holds the shortest term as Governor of the bank.

As you can see, the 2 and 5 kina notes are in circulated condition. I got these two notes from someone who once worked in Papua New Guinea. I got them at face value and did not bother to have them replaced with those in batter condition.

These notes ceased legal tender on 30.06.2013.

These are the two reprints of 2 and 50 Kina both dated (nd)2017. The design of these two notes are almost identical as those previously issued except for the followings; -

1) The size of these notes have been reduced as compared to previous issues. The 2 Kina is measured at 125mm x 70mm (previously 140mm x 70mm) and the 50 Kina is 146mm x 70mm (previously 151mm x 76mm). The first reduced size note was the 5 Kina printed with ND2016;
2) Most of the designs are also reduced slightly to accommodate the smaller sized note; and
3) The design on the 2 Kina top right corner has also been altered with different colour (see below comparison).

Papua New Guinea hosted the 2018 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum between 17-18 November 2018 in it's capital city, Port Moresby. A total of 21 nations in the Asia and Pacific region (Pacific Rim) attended this annual meeting. In addition to these, 13 leaders and representatives of the Pacific Island nations* in the Pacific region were also invited to this meeting. Whilst APEC meetings first started in 1989 and were held in Canberra Australia, this is the first time Papua New Guinea had hosted this event. The main purpose of APEC is to create greater prosperity among its members.

The current 21 members of APEC are - Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea (host 2018), Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United States and Vietnam. It has a combined population of 2.6 billion or more than one third of the world's population.

To commemorate this special event, the Bank of Papua New Guinea issued a 100 Kina ND2018. The design of the note is the same as the current 100 Kina polymer note but with the APEC logo added to the top right corner of the note. In addition to this, the main design has been slightly altered as follows; -

1) The height of the note has been reduced from 151mm x 75mm to 151mm x 71mm;
2) The two Birds of Paradise are now a see-through feature and golden rolling colour effects are also added around the see-through window on both sides of the note.

The signatures on the note are - Loi Martin Bakani (Bank Governor) and Dairi Vele (Secretary, Department of Treasury). It should also be noted that Papua New Guinea has been releasing commemorative banknotes using existing or current designs since 1991.

This is the first time a commemorative banknote has been issued to commemorate this APEC meeting since 1989. The next APEC meeting will be held in Santiago Chile on 16-17 November 2019 and then in Malaysia in 2020. This will be Malaysia's second time hosting this forum.

To be a member of APEC, the nation's geographical location needs to have a pacific border situated between Asia and America. Other nations which do not share a common geographical location can still apply to be a member. Cambodia has applied to be a member of APEC and is awaiting approval. India has also applied to be a member but was not successful. Other countries have also shown their interest in joining and they are Mongolia, Laos, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador and Colombia.

This is the first 2 Kina banknote issued by the Bank of Papua New Guinea in 1975 since gaining independence from Australia. A complete set comprises 3 notes. The other missing notes are 5 and 10 Kina.
