Solomon Islands
Central Bank of Solomon Islands
(Established 1983)
Currency : Dollar (SBD)
Anthony V Hughes & Mariano Kelesi
Note - Missing $2, $5, $10 and $20 specimen
Posted below is a $50 specimen note issued in 1986. This was the first time that the portrait of the British monarch was not featured on banknotes issued by Solomon Islands. The full set of notes consists of $2, $5, $10, $20 and for the first time a $50 is issued. For the record, Solomon Islands has never issued a $1 in paper banknote since gaining independence.
Unfortunately this is the only $50 specimen note I have for this series. This note bears the signature of the Governor Anthony V Hughes and another board member, whom I do not know have any details about this person or his/her name.
This is the second series of notes issued since 1977, and as such, the first prefix of this series is B/1.
I do have a full set of this circulating 1986 series in UNC condition. I got this set in the late 80s from a very close friend who was then working in the Solomon Islands. I believe I have a complete collection of all banknotes issued in Solomon Islands since 1986.
Solomon Islands used Australian dollars (AUD) prior to issuing its own currency in 1977. Between 1977 to 1979, the Australian dollar was at par with the SBD. In 1979, the government floated the SBD to allow its exchange value to be determined by the international markets. However, due to the stagnated economy, the SBD went nosedive since then and for today the SBD is worth less than 20% of the AUD.
